As an oldschool player, how do you see the actual Quake community ?
I’m a little sad, seeing the community cut in two parts, between Quake3 and Quake4...or more like 80% on Quake3 and 20% on Quake4. It’s true the fourth opus is not really great on the gameplay pov, and I never found in it the fun I found playing Quake3. Nowadays, we see just like PainKiller, something like 30 players playing a lot, and nothing aside.


Let’s talk about Quake4 while we’re at : You played it quite a bit to have a pertinent opinion upon it : Seems like the 1.3 brings some fun...
I played a bit in 1.3, and there are a few positive changes, like the general speed of the games. However, I’m deceived by the new weapon balance, where the shaft is less interesting, and the plasma totally unusable (I do use it a lot...). The rockets are more powerful, so the splashes are a pain in the ass to avoid now... And finally, there is still no GTV, even if the streaming tends to replace it, it does not have the same impact on the public, who can’t feel "ingame".


We saw you often lately on french Quake3 public servers...Are you coming back to your first love ?
I have plenty of time to play Q3 now, and it’s going to be more and more since I’m organising my agenda in order to...
That is to say ?
I’m just enjoying some RA3 public and a few pickups and duels at the moment... I still have the EuroCup Finals in Denmark around 22th of september with aAa, so I’m gonna stick to Quake4 for a bit. But then, I’ll stop Quake4. After one year at quake4, I’ve opened my eyes and I think I’m not having fun anymore playing it, where quake3 still gives me thrills!

Are you planning to play for fun only ?
I have plenty of projects on Quake3! I registered myself last week for the CPL Winter in Dallas in december. As I always said, I’m not registering at an event for nothing.


Therefore you gonna prac CPMA vq3 ?
I’m gonna prac Quake3, and CPMA vq3 of course. I’ve already bought 2 plane tickets to CPL Italy and Sweden at the end of november. A bootcamp is planed at my’s in Paris in november just before that. I feel over-motivated, and I didn’t feel this for 4 years at least...I know when I have this will to win, I easily end in Top3 of competitions, so I’m gonna take advantage of this state of mind!
Besides, with the studies and the job, it was hard to step up on Quake4. For example, when I’m witnessing Forever asking for q4 duel all day long, for months, I’m telling myself quake3 doesn’t ask me this much to be at the top. It’s just like bicycling, once you know, you can’t forget. Moreover, I find more free time for quake3 than quake4...


We feel you’re over-motivated, but what about the oldschool-legends-of-Quake3-opponents ? Do you have an idea of their actual Q3 level ?
It seems like a lot of comebacks are announced for that CPL...Czm, Cooller, Fox and some other strong international opponents who are always here. I would say their level of prac at Quake3 is near of zero, they haven’t started yet from what I heard. We saw Cypher losing to Keeper lately on a russian Asus event. It shows that Q3 and Q4 are different things...when cooller says he can handle both a the same time, I hardly believe him.


And what about your sensations/feeling at Quake3, after some games ?
I quickly recovered very good sensations, even if I changed mouse and mousepad lately. Besides, I’m happy to see the duel level has increased a bit while I was playing Q4, it helps me to gain confidence more quickly.


Did you play against some "serious" opponent lately ? (it stays a "internet duel" though...)
Yes, I played against Impulse, Brescia, Redemz (with whom I’m gonna bootcamp), Sama and Wrath (who should attempt the european stops of the CPL WT), and Ddk from Dignitas.
Results ?
Some whine, some disconnections...


What about the other aAa players (quake3 and 4) ? Some people are asking about the becoming of Winz, Appleseed or even Thefou!
I don’t really know. I know Raoul and Appleseed are playing quake3 sometimes (note : Raoul plays for the Mobach team in jolt CTF league). I don’t think Thefou will come back to international level duel. About Winz, I don’t know anything...

What is your opinion about the impressive result of Cypher at the last ESWC (second behind Winz). And are you a bit scared about some european players?
For Cypher, I don’t really know if he plans to play q3 or not. Since he lost against Keeper last week-end, it’s a thin performance imo. Forever won’t go back to Q3, and Stermy will do only for Grand Final.
Regarding the young Av3k and Cypher, who did well under Quake4 in Europe:
1. I’m not scared at all, cause there’s no way they could have enough experience for a big Q3 tourney.
2. I know Av3k is too young to attempt the CPL, and it must be the same for Cypher!


If you’re gonna give your very best, why not attempt all of the World Tour ?
I’ll do only Italy and Sweden.
Lack of money for other stops ?
Well, I finance myself all of these stops. I’m waiting for the aAa team, to see if I get their support. I could do every european stop if I manage to reach the top8 every time, which is very possible in my opinion. Then I could handle myself the travel to the United States. Obviously, if I get smashed in Italy and Sweden, I won’t spend a thousand more euros to go to Grand Final.


We’re gonna see again a french at top level duel in Quake3 very soon then ?!
Yes, It’s now or never to win my CPL.


You already did a great tournament at ESWC 2005, where people not really awaited you...I was myself surprised by the anxiety your style induced in the mind of your opponents, sometimes oldschool legends like Czm (remembering a very tight game between you and Czm on dm13).
Yes, it’s kinda funny to hear people qualifying my style as "original", that is to say "uncomfortable as hell". I have to find again a good balance and a nice timing...I missed it back then. When I watch some of my demos of this ESWC, I want to slap myself!


A word to conclude ?
I won’t attempt CPL to be a spectator!
